Skyline to the Sea Run and Clambake
September 12th, 2010
The Stevens Creek Striders Skyline to the Sea Clambake was held Sunday, September 12th near Waddell Beach and preceded by 28, 16, or 12 mile runs.  This is a mostly downhill fun endurance run through some of the world's most beautiful scenery, with expansive visas of the Santa Cruz summits to the gentile beauty of Big Basin's Berry Falls in September. A cool, but sparkling dawn greeted our runners at Highway 9 and Skyline Blvd were the run began. The coolness was welcome after the dusty heat of last year.  A rolling aid station raced a head of runners to provide welcome treats and drinks at locations along the way. A fee of $10 for members and $25 for non-members was required to offset insurance for the event. Non-members received a one year Stevens Creek Striders membership.  Thanks to Johanna Ylanen and Randy Ison for their photos. Here

Last Chance Aid Station, Western States 100
June 27th, 2010

Striders' previous President Peter writes: "As I mentioned at the last Saturday's club run, on behalf of the Striders I'd like to thank Lina & Peggy for all their hard work as joint Aid Station Captains this year. Their huge efforts behind the scenes over many weeks really paid off last weekend. And thank you to everyone who helped at Last Chance to make it what is probably the race's finest Aid Station. Very little dust and remarkably straight!"

Striders Spring Picnic

The annual Striders Spring Picnic, was held on May 23rd after the Striders Predictive Race. Congratulations to Peter Baum for his almost perfect estimate (-1 minute) of  his time in the Predictive Race. The picnic is held in the area adjacent to where we park (by the pretty little creek).

In the future, charcoal will be provided for roasting any meats you wish to bring. Please bring a potluck item to share, and bring your own plates, utensils and drinks. Any games you might have to add to the fun would be appreciated.....wiffle ball, table games, Frisbee, etc. This is a nice opportunity to socialize with other club members, relax, and enjoy the pretty surroundings of the lovely park we run in. Hope to see you there!"

Quicksilver Aid Station
May 8th, 2010
The Striders did their customary great job of manning the Dam Overlook Aid Station at the Almaden-Quicksilver 50 Mile/50K/25k ultra race on Saturday May 8. Bill Jones and Gene Kiernan volunteered as co-captains this year and when Gene caught a nasty bug Peggy Alfred valiantly jumped in to help out. That was a good thing, since Bill managed to sleep thru his 4:15 alarm and only arrived at the aid station, with all the gear, just in time to set up for the first runner.

The Striders were well-represented in the race- Jean Pommier, Bill Dodson, Christina Brownson (paced later on by Patty Koren) and Charles Stevens ran various distances and we got to cheer them on multiple times as they passed thru our station. The race organizers did a fabulous job and even managed to hump a couple of extra water jugs up to the site to avoid us running out.

The Club Volunteers included Steve Reagan, Tom Kaisersatt(!), Patty Koren, Larry Meyers, Rob Larson, John McKiernan, Randy Ison, Mike Shields, Lina McCain, Mike Florence, Anil Rao, Maria Morales, Patrick, Claire, Liam and Isaac Sexton as well as Bill and Peggy. This was good practice for the Last Chance Aid Station at Western States in late June.

Jean Pommier was second overall and set an age group record for the 50-mile course- 12 minutes faster than the previous in 6:48:58. Charles Stevens: 9:30:26, Bill Dodson: 11:06:36. In the 50k we had Christina Brownson: 07:27:45.  The volunteers got to enjoy a great barbecue at the finish line after packing up all the gear.

Western States
Saturday-Sunday
June 27-29, 2008

Mark your calendars now to go to Western States and prepare for some fun.

Striders have been doing the aid station at Last Chance for more than 25 years - a proud record. The aid station is at mile 43 on this demanding run. Striders try to provide the best aid station in the event.

The name Last Chance comes from a ghost mining village at the site. Today it's forest wilderness, although mining only ceased as recently as 1970.

We travel to Last Chance on Friday and camp overnight. The aid station is open from 11am until 5pm on Saturday. Then we clear up and proceed to watch the finish at Placer High School, Auburn.

Christmas Relays
Sunday
December 16, 2007
The "Christmas Relays" are a fun event for teams of 4 runners. They take place at Lake Merced in San Francisco. Every runner has to run once round the lake - a distance of 4.5 miles. Of course there's a little bit of friendly rivalry between the different teams from Striders. Certainly not an event to be taken too seriously. Followed of course by breakfast somewhere on the way home. Last run of the year for most Striders.

Bay to Breakers
Sunday May 20, 2007

Bay to Breakers is the largest footrace in the world and attracts more than 70,000 folks to run and walk from the Bay Bridge, across San Francisco to finish on Pacific Ocean in Golden Gate Park. Striders have been part of the "Palace Guard" during the last few years and get to run behind the elites and in front of the masses. However our 'insider' hasn't been able to fix this anymore. Pity.

Anyway, Robin and Elvira intend to run. If you'd like to come, please email the board: board@stevenscreekstriders.org
