Volunteer for an Aid Station
You may use this form to volunteer to serve at an aid station. This for sends an email to the station captains: Quicksilver: Patrick and Peggy. Western States: Robin and Jean.
Directions to Quicksilver Dam Overlook Aid Station
Go South on highway 85
You'll pass exits to hwy 17 and Union ave.
Exit at Camden Ave.
Stay in the left lane and turn left onto Camden.
You will be going south.
After approx 1 mile make a right turn at Hicks Road. There is a light at this intersection.
Stay to the left at any forks. This is a twisty road into the country. After 6 or 7 miles you will come to the dam. It is on the left. There are some short concrete pillars that mark the entrance to the dam. Find a turnout and park. Lock your car. This is a remote area.
Walk across the dam and turn right UP the hill about 1/2 mile. We set up at a trail intersection near a bench that overlooks the reservoir.

Please bring your own water, sunscreen, hat and folding chair. If you're coming at 6am, take care to wrap up and stay warm.
Directions to Last Chance
Take Interstate 80 to Auburn. Exit at "Foresthill - Auburn Ravine Road". This exit is three exits past State Highway 49. At the exit, go right and through the intersection. I suggest that you fill-up your gas tank at this corner—the round trip from this point is 94 miles on mountain roads. Also, if you need any last minute things there is a Raley's Shopping Center across the street.
Set your odometer to 00000.
Foresthill is directly ahead of you in 16.4 miles.
At mile 16.4 you will see a Beacon gas station on your right; a sign that says "Welcome to Foresthill"; and a green sign that says "French Meadows 53 ?". The road on your right is Mosquito Ridge Road.
Reset your odometer to 00000.
Go right on Mosquito Ridge Road. This is a paved and winding mountain road with no guardrail, so be careful.
At mile 22.8 (or 23.7) you will see a brown sign that says "44" - Deep Canyon Road/Last Chance. This is a small sign, so don't miss it. Go left and stay on the paved road. Don't take the dirt road.
Go through the crossing. At mile 24.4 (or 25.4) the road becomes gravel.
At mile 27.6 (or 28.7) go straight. This junction becomes the Deep Canyon II Aid Station. From this point on you will be driving on the Western States Trail. Also, the road is rocky, so watch out for your oil pan.
At mile 30.0 (or 31.2) go right. If you have sharp eyes you will see a "Last Chance" sign.
At mile 30.2 (or 31.4) go left. The yellow ribbons hanging from the trees are the Western States Trail markers.
At mile 30.6 (or 31.7) go left. The Last Chance Aid Station is directly ahead.
Information about the Last Chance Aid Station
| | |
| When? | From Friday June 27, to Sunday June 29 (you can join us on Saturday only but have to be on site by 9am until 5:30pm because the access road closes during the race) |
| | |
| Where? | Up in the mountains (after Foresthill), at mile 43 on race course. Driving is about 5 hours from Cupertino (with no traffic - 3.5hrs to Auburn, then 1.5hrs). Detailed driving instructions will be available in June. For the non insiders, we'll camp near gold mines and, if you are nice to Jerry, he may give you some miner's clues on Friday afternoon... ;-) |

| Who? | Everybody can help out, no special running, medical or cooking experience, we have all sorts of jobs for you: "all you can eat buffet" and bar tenders, drop bag dispatchers, greeters, time keepers (runner check-in and check-out), "car wash" station. As much as possible, we would like the volunteers to come from the Striders, but we gladly extend the invitation to our friends of San Jose Fit, and other connections, and race organization can also provide some candidates. Overall the station works at full steam with around 30 volunteers. |
| | |
| Why? | Our club is proud to have managed this aid station for 25 years (25th anniversary last year!), and we intend to extend this tenure as long as possible thanks to your support and active participation. |
| | |
| How? | We do have a one weekend permit from the forest rangers to set-up a dry camping at the station. No special dress code (!), except for the official volunteer tee-shirt which will be provided on race day. |
| | |
| What to bring? | Camping gear (I'll send detail list to the participants), stories and music for the evening camp fires, good mood to cheer the runners, and ice for helping them keep "cool". |
We will send more information to participants early June. The best way to reach us is by email: stationcaptain@stevenscreekstriders.org. Or at the Saturday meetings/runs, 8:30 at Stevens Creek Park, where Bob and Marsha will pass sign-in sheets.
We look forward to everybody joining us to contribute to another great edition of the Last Chance aid station!
