    John's story:
Dad wanted to meet the old 5:30 finish time requirements or 5:40 at worst. I told him I would pace him to 5:30 as long as he could manage it.

After 13-miles, we were on pace and he was comfortable with slight walking breaks up hills. Projected finish times kept dropping as we went, with good speed down hills or on flats. He kept his tendency to chatter in check and used speed play and good breathing to reduce cramping. He felt very loose in the last few miles as I kept pulling him along to meet the 5:30 clock-time goal.

I think he also got some inspiration from a surprise I gave him before the race. I prepared matching photos/signs for each to wear on our backs :

John : "I'm pacing my father Tom McKiernan to BSIM's first-ever over-80 finish."
Tom : "I'm pacing my son John McKiernan to his first-ever over-50 finish."

As we ran side-by-side, we got lots of compliments and support along the course, at the finish area and after.

    Christina's story:
Race director John Medinger calls this "One Rugged Run" He wasn't kidding! The elevation gain was 10,500 ft, originally estimated at 5,000, guess John didn't want to scare the runners in fear of them running away. Not to mention the temps got up in the 90's. I've run several 50 milers and this is the toughest one so far.

Penny had something like this to say on the phone:
First running of this one. The web site said "about 5000ft of climbing". Really? More than 5000ft at the turn, and on a very hot day. Very difficult event. Web site mysteriously updated to tell the truth after the event. 10,500 feet. Lots of good people DNF'ed.

    Bill's story:
I finished 3rd of 14 in 70 to 74. First was Russ Kiernan who has won Dipsea and just turned 70. Second was Carl Petersen, also 70, who beat me in the SF Half. I'm happy with it, considering I ran the WTC a week before and a hard hour and a half trail run the with the Strtiders the day before.

    John's story:

    I had three goals :

    1. (minimum) 3:56 or better
    2. (primary) 3:50 or better
    3. Get to start line on time

The latter is a long story, and I failed. My wife dropped me off near the staging area 6 minutes before start time, so I started without any warm-up except a 1/2 mile jog to get there, and after I used the "facilities" I started at least 5-minutes after the start.

There wasn't any chip timing, so my official time was 3:54:30 , but given my late start, I think I met both goals. Lessons leaned : avoid late shopping at the outlets the night before, and stay at a hotel closer to the race (not 40 miles away to save nothing in the long run) .

Later in the day, I heard from my father (Tom McK) ran a 5:48 LA Marathon, good for third in the 80+ male group. Still later, my right ankle started to show signs of swelling and stiffness that are still lingering. I'm not sure where that came from.

    John's story:
This event was in Las Vegas at Red Rock Canyon National Park. It was a terrific day. Freezing rain, howling wind, snow on the rim of the Canyon, a flash flood on the drive up there, waterfalls that only fire off about 2-3 days a year, and creeks that were flowing that are dry almost all year. There was a young guy named Josh Brimhall that ran a 4:32 which was fantastic in those conditions. Red Rock Canyon is a great place to run, lots of gnarly trails.
